Therapy FAQs: Your Questions About Counseling in Illinois & Michigan
What can I talk about in therapy?
Truly, anything that’s on your mind. Many of our clients explore stress, identity shifts, cultural or family dynamics, relationships, trauma, grief, or the exhaustion of everyday life. Nothing is too “small” or too “big.” Therapy is your space to bring whatever feels heavy, confusing, or important.
What’s your approach to therapy?
Each therapist at Sohail Counseling & Care brings their own style, but we all share a warm, relational, and culturally inclusive approach. We integrate evidence-based methods like CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy), ACT (Acceptance & Commitment Therapy), mindfulness, and narrative therapy; always centering your story, your culture, and your needs.
How do I know which therapist is right for me?
It’s normal to wonder about fit. When you reach out, we’ll ask about your goals, background, and preferences to match you with a therapist who feels like a good fit. And if you’d ever like to switch, we’ll support you in making that transition smooth and comfortable.
Do you offer virtual therapy?
Yes. All sessions are offered online for clients in Illinois and Michigan. That means you can join therapy from home, your dorm, or wherever you feel most at ease.
How long are therapy sessions?
Most sessions are 55 minutes. Many clients meet weekly, while others prefer every other week. We’ll work with you to find a rhythm that supports your goals and feels sustainable.
Do you take insurance?
Yes! We currently accept Aetna, Blue Cross Blue Shield (BCBS), UnitedHealthcare (UHC), Health Alliance Plan (HAP), Priority Health, and Cigna. Coverage may vary by therapist and plan. When you reach out, we’ll verify your benefits and explain everything clearly, so you know exactly what to expect.
Is therapy 100% covered by insurance?
It depends on your plan. Some clients have full coverage, while others pay a copay or deductible. We’ll walk you through your benefits so you know your exact cost before starting.
How much does therapy cost without insurance?
Our current private pay rates are $200 for intake and $150 for ongoing individual therapy sessions, and $200 for intake and $175 for ongoing couples sessions. If you’re out-of-network, we can provide a superbill for possible reimbursement.
How do I start therapy with you?
It starts with a free 15-minute consultation. You’ll connect with a therapist, share what you’re hoping for, and ask any questions. From there, we’ll help you book your first full session and get started.
What can I expect in my first therapy session?
The first session is focused on you; your story, what brings you in, and what you’d like to work on. You don’t have to share everything at once. Your therapist will guide you gently, making sure you feel safe and supported as you set goals together.
How do I know if therapy is working?
Progress looks different for everyone. You might notice feeling less anxious, having more clarity, handling stress in healthier ways, or improving your relationships. Your therapist will check in regularly to help you track growth and make adjustments if needed.
How often should I go to therapy?
Most people start with weekly sessions. Over time, some transition to biweekly or monthly check-ins. We’ll collaborate to find a frequency that matches your needs and feels sustainable.
What is telehealth?
Telehealth means receiving therapy through secure video sessions instead of in-person. It allows you to connect with your therapist from the comfort of your home, while still receiving the same quality of care.
Is premarital counseling right for us?
Premarital counseling can benefit couples at any stage of commitment; whether you’re dating seriously, engaged, or newly married. It helps you strengthen communication, explore expectations, and build a solid foundation for the future.
What should couples talk about in premarital counseling?
We focus on the big three:
Communication — how you resolve conflict and express needs.
Family & cultural expectations — navigating traditions, values, and identity differences.
Future planning — intimacy, finances, parenting, and long-term goals.
When should couples start premarital counseling?
The earlier, the better! Many couples start while engaged, but you don’t need to wait until a wedding date is set. Premarital counseling helps strengthen your bond no matter your stage.
How long does premarital counseling last?
We typically recommend six sessions. This gives couples enough time to cover core topics, practice tools, and feel confident moving forward.
What is a BIPOC therapist?
BIPOC stands for Black, Indigenous, and People of Color. A BIPOC therapist brings lived experience and cultural awareness that can be especially meaningful for clients navigating identity, generational trauma, or cultural pressures. Our team includes diverse therapists who bring both professional expertise and personal understanding to the work.
