Autism & Neurodivergence Therapy in Illinois

In-Person & Online Autism Therapy in West Dundee & Chicago, IL

Neurodivergent-affirming therapy for children, teens, and adults- honoring how your brain works while supporting emotional well-being, relationships, and daily life.

Sessions are offered in person and virtually, making it easier for teens to access counseling for autism and neurodivergence.

Neurodivergence isn’t something to be fixed- it’s a natural and valuable part of human diversity. Still, living in a world built around neurotypical expectations can be exhausting, confusing, and isolating for autistic and neurodivergent individuals.

At Sohail Counseling, we provide therapy for autism spectrum disorder and neurodivergent individuals across Illinois, including Chicago and West Dundee. Our therapists offer neurodiverse-affirming therapy for children, teens, and adults, supporting emotional regulation, identity development, relationships, and everyday stressors- without trying to change who you are.

Who Autism and Neurodivergent Therapy Is For

Autism and neurodivergent-affirming therapy may be a good fit if you or your child:

  • Identify as autistic, neurodivergent, or think you might be

  • Were diagnosed with autism or ADHD later in life

  • Feel overwhelmed, misunderstood, or chronically exhausted

  • Experience sensory sensitivities or emotional overload

  • Struggle with social expectations, masking, or burnout

  • Want a therapist who understands neurodivergent experiences

  • Are seeking therapy for neurodivergent adults or support for neurodivergent kids

A formal diagnosis is not required to begin therapy.

Common Reasons People Seek Neurodivergent-Affirming Therapy

Many clients seek care because of:

  • Chronic burnout from masking or “pushing through”

  • Anxiety, depression, or emotional shutdown

  • Difficulty navigating relationships or communication

  • Sensory overwhelm or difficulty with transitions

  • Identity confusion after a late autism or ADHD diagnosis

  • School, workplace, or family stress

  • Feeling like therapy in the past didn’t fully “get it”

Neurodivergent therapy focuses on support, not normalization.

What Neurodivergent-Affirming Therapy Looks Like

Therapy at Sohail Counseling is collaborative, respectful, and flexible. We adapt sessions to how your brain processes information rather than asking you to adapt to therapy.

You can expect:

  • A strengths-based, non-pathologizing approach

  • Respect for sensory needs, communication styles, and pacing

  • Space to explore identity, burnout, and self-advocacy

  • Practical strategies for daily life and emotional regulation

  • Therapy that honors autonomy and personal goals

For children and teens, therapy may also include parent collaboration when helpful.

Our Therapeutic Approach

Our therapists use neurodiversity-affirming, trauma-informed approaches, including:

  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) adapted for neurodivergent clients

  • Mindfulness and nervous-system regulation strategies

  • Relational and attachment-informed therapy

  • Identity-focused and strengths-based work

  • Executive functioning and emotional regulation support

Therapy is tailored- not prescriptive.
