Sex Therapy in Illinois

We serve clients across Illinois, including Chicago and West Dundee, with in-person and online options.

Support for intimacy concerns, sexual challenges, and reconnecting emotionally and physically.

Sexual concerns are far more common than most couples talk about- yet they’re often one of the hardest topics to bring into the open.

Many people feel shame, embarrassment, or fear of being misunderstood when intimacy isn’t working the way they hoped it would.

At Sohail Counseling, we offer sex therapy and intimacy-focused counseling for individuals and couples navigating sexual difficulties, mismatched desire, emotional disconnection, or changes in intimacy over time. Sex therapy provides a respectful, confidential space to explore what’s happening- without judgment or pressure.

Who Sex Therapy Is For

Sex therapy may be helpful if you or your relationship are experiencing:

  • Difficulty with desire, arousal, or satisfaction

  • Mismatched libido between partners

  • Anxiety, shame, or avoidance around sex

  • Pain or discomfort impacting intimacy

  • Emotional distance affecting physical connection

  • Sexual challenges after trauma, illness, or life transitions

  • Difficulty communicating needs, boundaries, or preferences

You do not need a diagnosis or crisis to benefit from sex therapy.

Common Reasons People Seek Sex Therapy

Clients often seek counseling for sexual problems when they notice:

  • Ongoing frustration or tension related to intimacy

  • Loss of sexual connection after stress, parenting, or illness

  • Avoidance of physical closeness due to anxiety or fear

  • Feeling disconnected despite wanting closeness

  • Confusion about what’s “normal” or expected

  • Difficulty talking about sex without conflict

Sex therapy helps move these conversations out of silence and into understanding.

What This Work Looks Like

Sex therapy focuses on understanding the emotional, relational, and psychological factors that shape intimacy.

Sessions may include:

  • Exploring beliefs and experiences around sex and intimacy

  • Identifying emotional or relational barriers to connection

  • Improving communication about needs and boundaries

  • Reducing anxiety and pressure around sexual performance

  • Rebuilding trust and safety after ruptures

  • Strengthening emotional intimacy alongside physical intimacy

Therapy is always collaborative and paced with care.

Our Therapeutic Approach

Our sex therapists take a trauma-informed, relational approach that centers safety, consent, and respect.

Therapy may include:

  • Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT)

  • Attachment-based couples therapy

  • Trauma-informed care

  • Communication and boundary work

  • Psychoeducation around intimacy and desire

We do not pathologize desire differences or impose “right” ways to be intimate.

Intimacy Therapy for Individuals and Couples

Sex therapy is not just about sexual behavior- it’s about connection.

Many intimacy challenges are linked to:

  • Stress, burnout, or emotional overload

  • Relationship conflict or unresolved resentment

  • Attachment patterns and emotional safety

  • Past experiences or trauma

  • Medical or hormonal changes

Intimacy therapy addresses both emotional closeness and physical connection, helping clients feel more secure and understood.
