Attachment Wounds Therapy in Illinois

We serve clients across Illinois, including Chicago and West Dundee, with in-person and online options.

Healing attachment wounds to create safer, more connected relationships.

Many relationship struggles aren’t about communication skills or “trying harder.”

They’re rooted in attachment wounds- early experiences that shaped how you learned to seek closeness, handle conflict, and protect yourself emotionally.

Attachment wounds can show up as fear of abandonment, emotional shutdown, jealousy, control, people-pleasing, or constant reassurance-seeking. These patterns often feel automatic and deeply personal, even when they’re hurting the relationship.

At Sohail Counseling, we offer attachment wounds therapy to help individuals and couples understand these patterns, heal attachment trauma, and build relationships that feel secure rather than stressful.

Who Attachment-Focused Therapy Is For

Attachment-focused therapy may be a good fit if you or your relationship struggles with:

  • Fear of abandonment or rejection

  • Emotional shutdown or avoidance

  • Intense reactions to conflict or distance

  • Repeating relationship patterns that feel familiar but painful

  • Difficulty trusting others

  • Feeling “too much” or “not enough” in relationships

  • Struggles with closeness, vulnerability, or dependence

These experiences are common responses to attachment trauma- not personal failures.

Common Signs of Attachment Wounds

Couples and individuals often seek healing attachment wounds when they notice:

  • One partner pursues while the other withdraws

  • Small conflicts escalating quickly

  • Feeling unsafe expressing needs or emotions

  • Strong emotional reactions that feel out of proportion

  • Difficulty repairing after disagreements

  • Feeling unseen, unimportant, or easily replaced

Without healing, attachment wounds can keep relationships stuck in cycles of distance and disconnection.

What This Work Looks Like

Attachment wounds therapy focuses on understanding why certain reactions feel so intense- and how to respond differently.

Therapy may include:

  • Exploring early attachment experiences and relational patterns

  • Identifying triggers connected to attachment trauma

  • Learning to recognize nervous system responses

  • Building emotional safety before addressing conflict

  • Practicing repair instead of avoidance or escalation

  • Developing secure ways to ask for closeness or space

This work is paced carefully to avoid overwhelm and promote real healing.

Our Therapeutic Approach

Our therapists use attachment-informed, trauma-aware methods that support lasting change.

Attachment wounds therapy may draw from:

  • Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT)

  • Attachment-based couples therapy

  • Internal Family Systems (IFS)

  • Somatic and nervous system regulation strategies

  • Relational trauma-informed care

We focus on helping clients experience safety in connection- not just understand it intellectually.

Healing Attachment Trauma in Relationships

Attachment trauma doesn’t always come from obvious abuse. It can form through:

  • Emotional inconsistency or neglect

  • Chronic invalidation

  • Unpredictable caregiving

  • Early loss or separation

  • Relationships where needs were minimized

Over time, these experiences teach the nervous system how to survive- not necessarily how to feel safe in connection. Healing attachment trauma helps update those patterns so relationships no longer feel threatening or exhausting.
