Therapy for Parents in Illinois

We serve clients across Illinois, including Chicago and West Dundee, with in-person and online options.

Support for the emotional, mental, and relational challenges of parenting.

Whether you’re navigating the transition into parenthood, raising young children, parenting teens, or juggling caregiving alongside work and relationships, parenting can feel overwhelming in ways no one fully prepares you for.

Parenting changes everything. Many parents come to therapy feeling exhausted, anxious, guilty, disconnected from themselves, or unsure if they’re “doing it right.”

At Sohail Counseling, we offer therapy for parents and parenting support counseling to help you process the emotional weight of parenting, build resilience, and feel more grounded in your role. Parenting therapy isn’t about perfection-it’s about support, clarity, and sustainability.

Who Parenting Therapy Is For

Parent therapy may be helpful if you’re:

  • Feeling emotionally drained or burned out as a parent

  • Struggling with anxiety, guilt, or self-doubt related to parenting

  • Adjusting to a new stage of parenthood

  • Feeling overwhelmed by competing demands

  • Navigating changes in your identity after becoming a parent

  • Experiencing conflict with your partner about parenting roles

  • Parenting a child with emotional, behavioral, or developmental needs

  • Feeling disconnected from yourself or your support system

Parenting therapy supports you, not just your child.

Common Reasons Parents Seek Therapy

Parents often come to counseling during times such as:

  • The transition into parenthood or adding another child

  • Sleep deprivation, mental overload, and chronic stress

  • Feeling overstimulated, irritable, or emotionally reactive

  • Struggling to balance work, family, and personal needs

  • Parenting through major life transitions or crises

  • Feeling isolated or unsupported

  • Carrying unresolved experiences from your own upbringing

These challenges are common- and they deserve support.

What This Work Looks Like

Parent therapy provides space to focus on your internal experience, not just parenting strategies.

In sessions, we may work on:

  • Processing the emotional impact of parenting

  • Understanding stress responses and emotional regulation

  • Exploring identity shifts after becoming a parent

  • Setting realistic expectations and boundaries

  • Reducing guilt, shame, and self-criticism

  • Strengthening communication and support systems

  • Developing coping strategies that actually fit your life

Therapy meets you where you are- without judgment.

Our Therapeutic Approach

Our parenting therapists use compassionate, evidence-informed approaches, including:

  • Attachment-based therapy

  • Trauma-informed care

  • Emotion-focused therapy

  • Mindfulness-based strategies

  • Systems and relational frameworks

We focus on helping parents feel supported, regulated, and empowered- not criticized or “fixed.”

Supporting Parents Through Transitions

Parenthood often reactivates old patterns, family-of-origin dynamics, and unmet needs. Therapy can help you understand how your past influences your parenting present- and give you tools to respond more intentionally.

This is especially important during transitions such as:

  • Becoming a first-time parent

  • Parenting through adolescence

  • Navigating co-parenting or blended families

  • Parenting while managing your own mental health
